It Started With a Phone Call: The Story Behind Lumera Heart Project

There's a question that changed everything for us.
Not a big, polished mission statement. Not a strategic insight from a boardroom. Just a phone call between two friends, one of them exhausted, one of them listening, and a question that neither of them could answer:
"There has to be something out there for caregivers to get some real rest. Why doesn't this exist?"
That question is where Lumera Heart Project begins.
Two Friends. Two Journeys. One Gap.
Lumera Heart Project was co-founded by two lifelong friends who each walked their own caregiving journey and arrived at the same realization: caregivers give everything, and receive almost nothing back.
One of our founders is a registered nurse. She and her brother cared for their mother at home while she worked full-time, attended school, and raised her family. She made a promise to keep her mom out of a facility, and she kept it. Day after day, through the hard mornings and the longer nights, she showed up. She leaned on her brother. She leaned on her faith. What she couldn't find, no matter where she looked, was a community that truly understood the cost of that promise.
So one afternoon, she picked up the phone and called her closest friend, Paula.
"There has to be something out there for caregivers to get some real rest. Why doesn't this exist?"
A question that would change everything.
Paula had been living that same reality from a different angle. She spent years as a caregiver, first for her military veteran grandfather, walking him through the final chapter of his life with love and patience. Later, after an unexpected family tragedy, she stepped in as a steady presence for her teenage nephew. Balancing caregiving with work, school, and the demands of daily life, she had felt it too: the slow accumulation of exhaustion, the isolation that builds quietly when you're always giving, the burnout that arrives even when the love is genuine.
Their stories were different. But what they felt was the same.
What We Found When We Started Looking
Once the question was asked, it couldn't be ignored. So they started looking for answers.
What they found was a system that was not built for caregivers.
Support exists, but it is fragmented. Resources are scattered across websites, hotlines, and hospital discharge packets that arrive when you're already overwhelmed. Community, when it can be found, is often clinical in tone or hard to access. And rest, true restoration, is treated as a luxury that caregivers are meant to earn only after everything else is done.
But caregivers are never done. That's the nature of the role.
The research confirmed what they already knew from living it. Millions of unpaid family caregivers across the country are experiencing burnout at alarming rates. They are sacrificing their own health, careers, relationships, and wellbeing to care for the people they love. And they are doing it largely alone, without the infrastructure of support that makes it sustainable.
The gap was real. The need was urgent. And no one was filling it the way it needed to be filled.
Why Community Is the Answer
When you are caregiving, isolation sneaks in slowly. You cancel plans because you can't leave. You stop explaining your situation because it's too complicated. You smile and say you're fine because you don't want to burden anyone. And eventually, the loneliness becomes part of the landscape, so familiar you stop noticing it.
Community breaks that cycle.
Not because it solves the practical problems of caregiving, but because it reminds you that you are not the only one. That what you're feeling is real and valid. That the people in the room understand, without you having to translate your experience into something more palatable.
Being seen without explanation is a profound form of relief. It is also something many caregivers have never experienced before.
At Lumera Heart Project, community is not an add-on to our work. It is the work. It is the place where restoration begins.
Why Resilience Is Not What You Think
There is a version of resilience that is just endurance with better branding. Push through. Stay strong. Keep going. Caregivers hear this constantly, and it does not help. It simply raises the bar on how much they are expected to carry before anyone acknowledges the weight.
That is not what we mean by resilience.
Resilience, the kind that actually sustains caregivers over the long journey, is built through rest, not in spite of it. It comes from having space to process, to reconnect with yourself, and to put down the weight for a moment and remember who you are outside of the caregiving role.
Caregiving is often not a short chapter. It is a years-long commitment that changes shape over time. The people who sustain it well are not the ones who refuse to break. They are the ones who have found ways to restore themselves along the way.
We believe that kind of resilience can be cultivated. With the right support. With the right community. With the right space to breathe.
What Lumera Heart Project Is Today
Lumera Heart Project offers free virtual community support designed specifically for family caregivers.
Our programs bring caregivers together in a space that feels less like a support group and more like a living room. A place where you can be honest. Where you don't have to show strength you don't have. Where the conversation is real because everyone in the room is living a version of the same story.
Our current programs include:
The Lumera Table — a weekly peer support gathering where caregivers connect, share, and find community across every stage of the caregiving journey. The format is warm and welcoming, built on the belief that showing up is enough.
Heart Sessions — monthly topic-focused conversations that go deeper into the issues caregivers face most. Each session is purposeful, grounded, and designed to send participants away with something they can actually use.
We are also building a growing library of wellness resources and tools to support caregivers wherever they are on the journey.
This is Phase 1. The foundation. The community that will make everything that comes next possible.
Our Belief
Caregivers are the steady heart of families and communities. They are the ones who show up, again and again, often without recognition, often without relief.
Even the strongest hearts need care.
When caregivers are supported, they do not just survive the journey. They are able to show up more fully, for the people they love and for themselves. That is not a small thing. That is the entire point.
Lumera Heart Project exists because two friends asked a question they could not stop thinking about, and decided to spend their energy on the answer.
We are glad you found us. You belong here.
